What is Wenge Wood?

Wenge Wood comes from the Millettia Laurentii tree, mainly found across Central and West Africa. It is also known by names such as African rosewood, awong, bokonge, and imitation ebony.

This hardwood is popular because of its unique appearance and strength. Dark wenge wood naturally features deep brown shades, often paired with lighter streaks that create striking grain patterns. These natural variations make every piece visually distinctive.

The wood is dense, durable, and highly resistant to fungi, termites, and wood-boring insects. Because of this natural resistance, it usually requires less treatment compared to many other hardwoods.

Its strength and elegant appearance make it suitable for various applications, including interior joinery, wall cladding, flooring, and custom furniture designs. As a trusted wood supplier in India, wenge wood furniture is widely used in luxury homes and commercial spaces because of its bold, modern appeal.

Kiln-dried Wenge wood generally has a density between 45–55 pounds per cubic foot, making it a heavy and durable material for long-term use.

Workability

It is very challenging to manually cut and polish, so a sharp blade is required for continuous cutting. Another problem is staining. Wenge wood dust causes eye and skin irritation, gastrointestinal cramping, and nervous system disorders. Due to the wood’s extreme density, machining is challenging, and the heat produced quickly wears down tools. For best results, tools must be kept as sharp as possible.

Sustainability

Wenge wood is being exploited, harvested, and dwindling as a result of the popularity of this type of lumber in Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources designated this tree as an endangered species as a result of the tree’s dramatic population decline over the past few decades. If you intend to buy a lot of wenge lumber for your floor, take the environment into account before making your choice.
