BFP Thermo® Beech Wood for Sustainable Architecture
What is BFP Thermo® Beech Wood?
European beech (Fagus sylvatica, family Fagaceae) is a fine-grained hardwood with a dried density of around 710 kg/m³ and a Janka hardness of roughly 1,450 lbf. It is strong, smooth, and turns and steam-bends beautifully — but it has two well-known drawbacks: it moves a great deal with humidity (volumetric shrinkage around 18%) and it is non-durable (EN 350 Class 5), susceptible to insect and fungal attack. Both issues make untreated beech unsuitable outdoors.
BFP Thermo® Beech is heat-treated in a low-oxygen atmosphere — around 190 °C for interior stability (Thermo-S) or about 212 °C for exterior durability (Thermo-D). The process sharply reduces beech’s moisture movement and lifts its durability to roughly EN 350 Class 2–3, making the Thermo-D grade suitable for cladding and decking. At the same time, beech’s pale straw colour deepens to a rich amber-to-chocolate brown throughout the board.
This transformation is what makes thermo beech notable: modification takes one of the least stable European hardwoods and makes it dependable enough for flooring, humid interiors, and sheltered exterior use, while keeping the smooth, even, understated surface beech is valued for.
For designers, thermo beech offers a fine, consistent grain with little dominant figure — ideal for clean contemporary joinery, flooring, and paneling — plus a warm, uniform tone.
As a trusted wood supplier in India, we produce beech to custom profiles. Clients assessing thermo beech wood price recognise that modification unlocks uses that untreated beech, with its high movement, simply cannot handle.

Workability
Beech machines, turns, and sands to an excellent finish and is one of the best of all timbers for steam bending — the reason it has long been used for bentwood furniture. After thermal modification it becomes more brittle and loses some strength and abrasion resistance, so it is sensitive to point loads; pre-drilling for fixings and care with fine edges is advised.

Sustainability
Beech is harvested from well-managed European forests where regeneration is carefully controlled, making it a responsibly renewable temperate hardwood. It is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and the thermal process relies solely on heat and steam without chemical preservatives.

Common Uses
Beech is a classic timber for steam-bent and bentwood furniture, flooring, cabinetry, plywood, workbenches, turned objects, toys, and kitchenware. Thermally modified beech extends this into flooring for humid interiors, cladding, decking, and sauna interiors where untreated beech would fail.
